For the Küf series, Sinejan collected dust, rust, and other debris to hint at how even the staunchest materials are in a state of always eroding and disappearing. She even makes the rust herself, in a jar inside her studio. Added to this poetic note is the fact that she was inspired by travels to locations she feels culturally connected with such as Turkey and Abkhazia, where she realized certain areas in the world are constantly being erased, much like the eroding materials she uses - either due to oppression or simply fading away in memory.

The work comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the artist.

Brooklyn local artist Sinejan Kılıç Buchina and her creative process

    Sinejan Kılıç Buchina

Born in Turkey / Works in Bushwick, Brooklyn

Sinejan’s mixed media paintings are an ode to the lived experiences of places that no article, photograph, or map can capture. Borders between two countries are never clear cut; languages become forgotten; some small towns cannot be reached by even mail, rendering it invisible. To parallel this constant process of unraveling, Sinejan erodes geographical boundaries on maps with stains of dirt, rust, spices, straw, and other materials collected from places she personally traveled to. She actually keeps glass jars of scrap metal on her studio cabinets that will one day turn into rust - a poetic process where even the most hardened, robust-looking materials eventually return to nature.
