Evan Ishmael uses the unconventional concrete as a surface to apply his signature soot and spray acrylic. In the Before Writing This I Asked a Librarian pairing, the book opens, the seam at the center indicated by the direction of the soot. This work, together with Two Books Suggested and Have Your Heart Examined, are linked by the color coordination of the first of each pair to each other and the second of each pair to themselves.

The work comes with a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the artist.

We offer $50 shipping in the continental U.S. and $20 installation service in the NYC metro area. Return shipping is also $50, but waived if you rent for 6 months or longer. Just shoot us an email and we'll help you safely return the artworks.

Your monthly rental payments accumulate and get deducted from the purchase price if you decide to buy the work.

    Works in East Williamsburg

Evan works from his studio in East Williamsburg, the back wall neatly lined with tools and the slightly sour smell of wood in the air. Considering his sculpture and design background, his command of unusual materials like soot residue, concrete, and spray doesn’t come as a surprise. But you may be surprised when his minimal, even digital looking, compositions start to unfold in poetic layers-- “bracing practice” indeed.
